CPCCLTC4001 – Licence to operate a tower crane
Course Details
Who this course is for
For employees who need a tower crane high risk work licence (class CT) to operate boom or jib tower cranes mounted on demountable or permanent tower structures. Suited to high-rise residential and commercial builders and major infrastructure contractors. Participants need a construction induction card (White Card) before carrying out construction work — CPCWHS1001 meets that requirement. Self-erecting tower cranes are not covered by this unit. CCT delivers this course to workplaces only — bookings are made by the employer for their own staff.

- Students must be working in the industry, with the course booked through their employer — CCT does not accept enrolments from individual members of the public

Licensing
This course leads to a high risk work licence but does not issue one. CCT delivers the training and conducts the assessment; the licence is issued by the work health and safety regulator.
- Assessment is the National Assessment Instrument (NAI), the mandated assessment for this licence class
- On a satisfactory result CCT issues the statement of attainment your operator takes to the regulator
- Apply within 60 days — the ACT requires the completion date on the statement of attainment to fall within 60 days of the application
- ACT applications are lodged through Access Canberra. A non-refundable application fee must be paid directly to Access Canberra to issue or change your physical photo card. Please refer to Access Canberra website for more details.
- The licence is valid for five years
- Workers who live outside the ACT apply through their own state or territory regulator
Further training to progress
CCT CPCCLHS3001 — Licence to operate a personnel and materials hoist — the other licensed vertical transport plant on a high-rise site, commonly held alongside a tower crane ticket
Official unit description (training.gov.au)
This unit specifies the skills and knowledge required to safely operate a tower crane. Tower crane work involves a boom crane or a jib crane (with horizontal or luffing jib) mounted on a demountable or permanent tower structure.
Self-erecting tower cranes are not included in this unit of competency.
Completion of the general construction induction training program, specified in the Safe Work Australia model Code of Practice: Construction Work, is required by anyone carrying out construction work. Achievement of CPCWHS1001 Prepare to work safely in the construction industry meets this requirement.
Competence in this unit does not in itself result in a licence. A licence is obtained after competence is assessed under applicable Commonwealth, state or territory work health and safety (WHS) regulations.
