Who this course is for

All workers on a tier-one construction site — tradespeople, labourers, apprentices, supervisors, site managers, and safety representatives. Mental health and impairment are whole-of-crew issues, so the course works best when delivered to the full crew together. CCT can run multiple sessions across a single mobilisation week to cover larger projects.

What you’ll cover

  • What workplace impairment is — and its six main types (mental health, fatigue, drugs and alcohol, injury and illness, environmental, resources)
  • Your Work Health and Safety Act 2011 (ACT) duty of care — as a worker (section 28) and as an employer / PCBU (section 19)
  • Recognising mental health impairment — common conditions, the healthy-to-ill continuum, and how it shows up on site
  • How fatigue impairs work performance — including the Dawson and Reid finding that 17 hours awake is equivalent to 0.05 BAC
  • Drug and alcohol impairment — illicit drugs, prescription medication, and over-the-counter medicines
  • How injury, illness, heat, noise, dehydration, and long rosters can all impair work
  • The Notice–Approach–Report–Refer framework for helping a workmate who may be impaired
  • When and how to escalate a concern through your site’s procedures
  • Support services in the ACT — crisis lines, MATES in Construction, Incolink, your employer’s EAP
